The territorial dispute: the United Kingdom and Mauritius

Chagos Islands are a group of seven atolls comprising more than 60 islands in the Indian Ocean. Until the 18th century, the islands were part of the African island nation of Mauritius, and then they began to arrive French colonists. In 1810 the French ceded the rights to the island of Great Britain, who decided to form a British territory in the Indian Ocean.

In 1971 the British leased the United States atoll of Diego Garcia, so they built a military base and drove the locals to this unique site inhabited the Chagos Islands. In 2010, the British government announced the archipelago marine park, apparently to stop the attempts of local residents to return to the island. Mauritius, in turn indicted by the United Kingdom in accordance with the UN Convention. At the moment it came to international arbitration, where representatives of both countries meet the UN tribunal in closed hearings on the legality of the marine reserve.
