Swains Island
The territorial dispute: the United States and New Zealand

Swains Island is an atoll and is located in the Pacific Ocean north of Samoa. Administration is a part of American Samoa. Geographically, he refers to Tokelau — a dependent territory of New Zealand under control. The island is home to 37 people employed, mainly collecting coconuts.

In 1856, the American Eli Hutchinson Jennings built a coconut plantation on the island, saying it bought the rights to the atoll in the British Captain Turnbull. His family owned the island until 1925, until Swains does not come under the jurisdiction of American Samoa.

March 25, 1981 New Zealand recognized American sovereignty over Swains Island, but a referendum in 2006 brought him a part of Tokelau, ie New Zealand.
