The territorial dispute: Russia and Japan

Formally established diplomatic relations, Russia and Japan in 1855 signed an agreement that Japan gets into possession of the island of Etorofu and Kunashir. But at the end of the Second World War the Soviet Union evicted from the islands of the Japanese.

In 1951, following the Treaty of San Francisco, Japan had to renounce all claims to the islands, but it clearly did not follow this regulation.

In 2006, a Russian patrol boat opened fire on a Japanese fishing vessel illegally staying off the disputed islands. In February 2015, the festival dedicated to the northern territories of Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Aubé has promised to free the island from the Russian control. At the moment the island is used by the Russian military for exercises.
